10 Tips to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

We’ve all had that moment, the one where you step out of your hairdresser’s chair, turn around to look at the mirror, and break down in tears. You got a haircut you hate, it happens. Instead of booking an appointment for the next day to get an expensive set of extensions, try some of these easy tips to make your hair grow faster. Sure it won’t happen over night, but you can still speed up the process a bit!

how to get long, healthy hair

  1. Massage your scalp daily. Whether in the shower, in the morning, or before bed, give your head a good massage. Start at the back of your neck and work your way up to the top of your head. This scalp massage won’t only feel great, but it will begin to stimulate the blood flow to your scalp,  which will help get the nutrients to the hair follicle quicker. Another way to increase blood flow is to flip your head upside down a few times through out the day. I am sure it sounds silly, and you may even look a little silly, but it will help!
  2. Avoid heat as much as you can. Obviously we want our hair to look styled and perfect everyday, but that constant use of the flat iron & blow dryer will severely damage your locks. The constant heat will cause breakage and damage to your hair, preventing it from ever getting longer. If you must use these hair tools, be sure to use a quality protective spray beforehand. Julep has a great hair topcoat, which I use every time I get out of the shower & before I style!
  3. Use a sulfate free shampoo & conditioner. Sulfates dry out your hair tremendously, which is very damaging. Be sure when you rinse out your conditioner that you use cold water. Also when shampooing your hair, be sure to pay attention to the scalp, removing all built up grime. Lastly, don’t wash your hair everyday; you will dry out your hair by ridding it of its natural (and healthy) oils.
  4. Get good rest, eat healthy, stay hydrated, and eliminate stress. These four lifestyle changes can help your hair growth dramatically. Sleep, for one, is a time where growth hormones are released… so that is one reason you want to get your 8 hours each night. As far as stress goes, just as with the rest of your health, high stress levels can be detrimental to the health of your hair. You also will want to eat a diet full of antioxidants, vitamin B, protein, and iron- all of which are important factors in hair growth. Lastly, drink lots of water. Dehydration shows up everywhere, hair included.
  5. Get trimmed up every 3 months. People often think, “If my hair grows from the scalp, why should I trim it”? Logically, you are right, your hair does grow from the scalp. Yet when you begin to get split ends at the bottom of your hair, it will just continue to break off shorter than it would if you trimmed it. Get a trim every 10-12 weeks and you will have hair that is healthy & long.
  6. Use a quality hairbrush! A natural boar bristle brush is the absolute best to use when trying to grow out your hair. They are very gentle on your hair, and assist in spreading your hairs natural oils from root to tip, which will make your hair strong, conditioned, and shiny. This boar bristle brush is the one I use, and I love it!
  7. Sleep on a silk pillowcase. I don’t know about you guys but when I wake up in the morning my hair is a frizzy & awful mess. Cotton pillowcases are woven in a way that your hair can get caught in them and break. A silk or satin pillowcase is gentle on your hair, and you will wake up with your hair looking like it did when you fell asleep.
  8. Take hair growth vitamins. I started taking these vitamins about 3 months ago, and my hair has grown like crazy. No matter how great you eat, there are some nutrients that you may be missing (i.e. Biotin), and these vitamins will fill that void.
  9. Try a mayonnaise hair treatment. I know this sounds gross, but it has been a trick that people have been using for years to make their hair healthier & grow faster. Mayo contains egg & oil, both of which will restore strength to your hair. Simply comb mayonnaise through your dry hair and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, be sure to wash all of it out or else your hair will end up looking greasy (and may be a little stinky)!
  10. Throw out your elastic bands & stop putting your hair in a pony. These bands & ponytails pull and tug on your hair, causing it to break & thus causing damage. Instead try using something soft like a Twistband (the anti-scrunchie), or let your hair down!
