As you’ve probably heard by now (especially if you’re a child of the 1980’s), a live-action Jem and the Holograms movie is officially in the works, and we couldn’t be more excited! Nashville actress Aubrey Peeples has been cast in the starring role, plus Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis have also signed on to play mystery roles. Showtime, Synergy!
With anticipation for the upcoming movie at a fever pitch, we’re taking a look back at a few of the lasting lessons that Jem and her cartoon bandmates taught us in one subject they knew well: the art of looking amazingly, awesomely, totally outrageous.
1. There’s no such thing as too much pink.
Jem was way ahead of her time on the whole pastel hair trend, rocking light pink locks way before they were the norm among actresses and models. And she wasn’t shy about bringing her love of all things pink into the rest of her look as well.
Pink isn’t just for princesses. Jem’s monochromatic style shows us that you can wear head-to-toe pink and still look like a glamorous, grown-up rock star. So go ahead, match your pink hair to your outfit. And your makeup. And your nails.
2. But clashing is cool, too.
Perhaps the biggest beauty lesson from the ladies of Jem is this: Whatever you want to wear, wear it. No color scheme is off limits!
Want to wear purple hair, orange eyeshadow, pink blush, red lipstick, and blue earrings at the same time? Shana did it, and she looked awesome.
Or how about blue hair, olive eyeshadow, orange blush and lips, and pink earrings? Stormer shows that it can be done.
3. The right way to exit a dressing room.
This is it. Now you know.
4. Eyebrow shape says a lot about you.
Pizzazz, the lead singer of The Misfits and Jem’s arch nemesis, has what are commonly referred to as “angry eyebrows”—jagged and pointy, like lightning bolts that could strike at any moment. It’s an alarming yet effective look if your goal is to be completely intimidating. If these eyebrows could talk, they would be screaming, “BEWAAARE!”
In contrast, Jem’s eyebrows showcase a softly curved, well-defined arch that seems to say, “Hi, nice to meet you. Let’s hug.” A much more inviting message, as far as eyebrow communication goes.
5. The right accessory can make your whole outfit.
For example, a perfectly placed scarf on your safari-chic ensemble:
Or a giant feather accent on your evening gown:
Or a high-tech pair of hologram-projecting earrings that allow you to conceal your identity (and achieve a sleek blonde blow-out) at a moment’s notice:
Or a majestic unicorn who glides through the sky with the greatest of ease:
But when you can’t find a unicorn, the perfect pair of pumps makes a fitting substitute.
6. It all comes down to confidence.
When you look great, you feel great. And when you feel great, you have nothing to fear—not even a rogue orca attack. (But just in case, maybe don’t dangle that fish over open waters.)
7. It doesn’t get better than glitter and gold.
An awesome song with an essential truth at its center: glitter and gold are beautifully bold.
Let’s hope these timeless tidbits of wisdom (and more!) make their way into the live-action Jem and the Holograms movie. In the meantime, we’ll be over here, singing “Glitter and Gold” and polishing our nails the perfect shade of Jem-approved pink.
