Break Your Nails Out of Hibernation in 6 Luxurious Steps

Chances are, if you’re here on our blog, you haven’t been ignoring your nails all winter. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy a little pampering to get ready for spring! Cold, dry weather and dark days can be harsh on our skin and nails, and so now is the perfect time to slough off those winter blues and start off the season with clean, moisturized, and well-groomed hands—all the better for showing off those vivid April nail colors!

This weekend, set aside an hour to treat yourself to this easy, six-step DIY nail and hand spring refresh treatment. Think of it as a way to awaken your hands from hibernation. Have a glass of lemonade or iced tea, and throw on your favorite upbeat album or playlist. If it’s sunny outside, sit on the porch or by a window while you do it to get the full “spring is here!” effect.

Three essentials for a spring refresh: Vanish, Glycolic Hand Scrub, and Rock Star

Step 1: Soften

The combination of 10% glycolic acid and naturally exfoliating apricot seeds makes our Glycolic Hand Scrubthe easiest, most luxurious way to whisk away those dry, dull skin cells and make way for softer, smoother, younger-looking hands. Plus, it smells amazing! To start the pampering process, dampen your hands and gently rub a quarter-sized amount of scrub on the backs and palms of your hands. And feel free to exfoliate any other dry spots while you’re at it, because Glycolic Hand Scrub also works well for areas like feet, elbows, knees, the backs of your arms—you name it! Just make sure to rinse well when you’re done.

Step 2: Prep

Now it’s time for my personal favorite part of the pampering process: Vanish Cuticle Softener & Remover. If you’ve never tried it before, it can be hard to explain what a big impact this little bottle will make on your mani routine. All you need are a couple drops at the base of each nail. Let it soak in for a second or two, then use a cuticle pusher or orangewood stick to push back your cuticles. Even if your cuticles are particularly dry or stubborn after a long winter, there’s no need to push too hard to loosen them, because Vanish does that work for you.

Wash your hands again, and you’ll already notice your nails looking cleaner and more conditioned. Bonus: Vanish also helps curb cuticle regrowth, so this step will keep your manis looking fresher all through spring.

Step 3: Shape & Buff

Using a buffer block, very gently file, buff, and shape your nails into your desired finish. The buffer block has two different sides: one with a finer grit, and one with a coarser grit. The finer grit is great for filing, buffing, and shaping the tip of your nail, while the coarser grit works to smooth any deep ridges on the top of your nail. Be gentle, because over-buffing can make your nails thinner and weaker.

Step 4: Treat

Getting out into the fresh air is one of the best things about spring—so why not let your nails enjoy the experience, too? Now that your hands are soft and your nails are clean and shaped, it’s time to prepare them for all those lovely pastel, neon, and nude spring manicures ahead. Apply Oxygen Nail Treatment to each nail—one or two layers, depending on your desired glossiness and tint. Oxygen is more permeable than normal polish, so it lets your nails breathe while strengthening and hardening them at the same time. It also has a gorgeously shiny, pale pink tint, so your nails get healthier and look chic doing it.

Allow the treatment to stay on your nails for at least a couple days. Reapplying a layer or two later in the week for an extra boost of strength.

Step 5: Heal

Once the Oxygen has completely dried, apply the Mighty Nail & Cuticle Serum. Mighty contains peptides, which are super-charged amino acids that build keratin (for stronger nails) and collagen (for softer, healthier cuticles). It comes in an easy applicator, and you only need one half-turn of the wand per hand. Allow the serum to completely soak into your cuticles, and continue to reapply twice daily for the best results.

Step 6: Moisturize

You’ve just given your hands the rock star treatment, so it’s only fitting to top off this pampering sesh withRock Star Hand Crème. Once you’ve let the Mighty soak in and dry, sit back and gently massage your hands with a quarter-sized amount of Rock Star. The shea butter, glycerin, coconut oil, and vitamin E will keep your hands feeling fresh and hydrated for hours, even if you wash them later. And the clean, floral scent will instantly get you in the spring spirit—even if Mother Nature hasn’t totally caught up yet.
