As we get older, collagen loses its elasticity and facial muscles begin to sag. Lifestyle choices, topical creams, and cosmetic procedures can all help us maintain (or regain) our youthful looks, but another safe and natural option is facial exercises.
Facial yoga is a series of facial movements that involve specific techniques designed to relax and tone the face. Check out Annalise Kagen’s website and book for even more information.
Read below for some basic exercises and facial yoga poses to tone the face.
Jowls: Jut your chin forward and slide your upper teeth behind your lower lip to create an under bite. Tilt your head toward the ceiling. Slowly smile keeping your mouth closed. Increase the width of your smile with five small controlled movements. Hold the pose for a count of five, and in five movements return your mouth to the starting position. Release your lip and relax. Repeat two more times.
+ Baby bird pose: Swallow while pressing the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Tilt your head to the left and swallow. Then repeat to the right side.
Eyes: Open your eyes wide, and place the side of your index fingers on the outer corner of your eyes. Keeping your upper lids as still as possible, raise your lower lids in five small measured movements. You should feel the eye muscles twitching. Hold for five seconds, relax, and repeat five times.
+ Satchmo pose: Open your eyes as wide as they will go, but do not wrinkle the brow. Focus on a point in front of you for about seven seconds. Repeat four times.
Lips: Purse your lips together. Lift your lips up toward your nose. Hold your lips as high as you can for five seconds. Relax and repeat five times.
+ Marilyn pose: Pucker your lips and blow an air kiss. Repeat.
