Kristy’s Story

Never offer to paint a child’s nails unless you are prepared to stay in one spot for two hours until everyone has their nails painted, including the mamas…and all the boys!

Kristy LeMond

All of our color names have a story, and September’s midnight blue crème, Kristy, is one we can’t stop talking about.

Kristy LeMond was, by all accounts, a bright shining light of love and kindness. Upon graduation from University of Washington, she embarked on a world-crossing journey to volunteer in orphanages, teach English, and spend every possible second living her life to the absolute fullest. Her travels took her to Africa, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Chile…. She left her people-loving mark on every place she landed. She sobbed each time she left (though always rejoiced in arriving home), and typically had armfuls of letters from children and new friends to accompany her.

She kept a brilliant, upbeat, inspiring blog which she called—fittingly—Wake up and Live. Her chronicles began just after college as she embarked on her travels.

On May 1 of this year, Kristy’s big, beautiful life was cut short by cancer. On Wake up and Live she chronicled the journey with her rare, aggressive sarcoma with incredible grace, transparency, and her signature humor and positivity.  Her presence in each moment is exceptional. To call it “moving” is an understatement.

We were clued in to Kristy’s incredible stamp on the world through some close friends of hers here in office at Julep, but it was in reading her blog where we absolutely succumbed to her positivity and charm. There is no question that Kristy is an inspirational woman. The only question we had was this: What color do we make in her honor?

Do we name a bright yellow for her love of sunflowers? Or a crystal blue, for her beautiful eyes?

Either would be an excellent choice. And yet… We wanted something less on-trend. Something that would endure, like Kristy’s mark on the world.

So, this one’s for you, Kristy. In honor of the deep blue seas you crossed to shine your light on the globe (and a wink to your sorority, where you embraced the role of Philanthropy Chair), and in time for September, your birth month. You continue to inspire us to wake up and live. Rest in peace, girlfriend.

Kristy is a September color release, and will be available to purchase on August 25th, 2013.

10% of all Kristy sales will go to the Kristy LeMond Memorial Fund.

I will purchase this polish in honor of this beautiful woman! My sister passed in July after her battle with LeiomyoSarcoma. She never had the chance to have her own but one of her favorite thing to do with my girls and her little sis was to get all done up and most of all paint there nails!

What a wonderful tribute to Kristy in beautiful blue, her color, and in September as she would turn 25 on Sept 15th. I will proudly wear Kristy blue in honor of her and her family and the beautiful life that inspires all of us. Wake up and Live. .. Everyday, with blue fingers and toes…because of Kristy.

I just got home from a trip to your Bellevue parlor. I was surrounding by about seven or eight women who seems to be celebrating someone’s birthday. I was the only person who was not part of the party. They all said they wanted to have their nails painted with “Kristy’s color.” It turns out that it was Kristy’s mom and her mom’s friends who were all honoring Kristy’s birthday weekend. Wow, I had to rush home and read more about the women they were celebrating! I just read the story and it souds like Kristy was such an amazing woman and I feel honored that I was amoungst her mom and friends today in celebration of her birthday weekend. Happy birthday, Kristy!!

When this came in my August box I gave it to my best friend Kristy for her birthday in August. She had leukemia and was awaiting a bone marrow transplant so it was an extra special coincidence. She wore her beautiful blue Kristy until her transplant this February. Sadly I lost my BFF on April 6. Think I will have to order myself a bottle, maybe when it doesn’t hurt so much. Thank you Julep.
