It’s Thursday, so you know what that means: time for another vintage throwback!
This edition of #throwbackthursday goes out to all our denim-wearing, big-hair-loving, cowboy-boot-wearing country cuties out there: a classic photo of the incomparable Dolly Parton.
Dolly’s style has evolved over her decades-spanning career, and she’s now best known for her larger-than-life, intricately embellished ensembles. (One of her most famous quotes is particularly telling and refreshingly honest: “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.”)
But back when she was first starting her career, you were more likely to see Ms. Parton in a gingham shirt and jeans than a bedazzled gown and pumps. And her Americana look wasn’t just to help sell records. Dolly grew up a small-town girl in Tennessee, and her style grew naturally out of that upbringing.
But even in her denim days, it’s clear that Dolly was moving toward a bigger, bolder look than most of her musical contemporaries would dare to attempt. Just look at her voluminous curly hair, huge hoop earrings, and vividly defined makeup in this early photo. She’s never been afraid to stand out, and “subtle” just isn’t in her vocabulary—just one of the many reasons Dolly Parton is a true style icon!
Get the look on your nails: The jeans-inspired blue nail look that we shared earlier this week would be the perfect ode to Dolly’s denim ensemble. But since this living legend doesn’t leave the house without a little bit of dazzle, why not kick it up a notch with a blue glitter topcoat? Aretha and Dolly: a perfect combination!
