Throwback Thursday: The Godmother of Great Taste

Happy Throwback Thursday! Today we’re honoring a woman whose influence on the fashion world simply can’t be overstated. Arguably the greatest, most influential designer ever: the woman who banished the corset, invented the little black dress, and ushered in a new era of sleek, sophisticated, and luxurious style that still flourishes today.

This woman, is, of course, the one and only Coco Chanel.

Coco Chanel’s innovative, less-is-more aesthetic and effortless sophistication reinvented women’s fashion in the 1910s and ’20s, and her legacy lives on in all of our closets—even if we don’t own a single Chanel item. Her fashion sense is still looked upon as the ultimate in timeless elegance, and her designs still influence and inspire many designers today. Thanks to Coco’s unique understanding of women’s bodies, and exquisite taste, today the Chanel brand lives on as the pinnacle in class and beauty.

Not only was Coco a brilliant fashion designer, but she also had an incomparable way with words. In our May Maven boxes, we sent along one of our favorite Coco Chanel quotes that never fails to inspire us:

And just like her dresses, suits, handbags, and fragrances, so many of Coco’s quips are just as powerful today as they were when she first said them:

“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

“Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside.”

“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”

Get the look on your nails: Our oxblood crème Coco (It Girl) is a color that feels both modern and vintage, effusing sophistication, elegance, and timeless style—just like the legend herself.
