Throwback Thursday: Elizabeth Taylor & the Timeless Power of Red Lipstick

It’s #throwbackthursday once again! Today we’re sharing a vintage photo of one of the ultimate style icons of the 20th Century—woman who defined “glamorous” for a generation and whose fearless fashion choices were ever-evolving through her many years in the movie business: Elizabeth Taylor.

This photo is a promotional image from one of Taylor’s early romantic comedies, a little known film called Love is Better Than Ever, released in 1952. Liz was only 20 years old at the time, and even in those more conservative days in American culture, her sultry persona was already apparent.

Back then, before all the diamonds, furs, and plunging necklines that would become her couture calling cards, Liz favored sweet, simple dresses that still showed off plenty of sex appeal—but even when highlighting her décolletage, she never veered into vulgarity.

We especially love this photo of Liz because everything about her look, from her green square-neck floral dress and hoop earrings to her perfectly groomed brows and soft curls, is truly timeless, fresh, and feminine. But the real star of the photograph—of her whole, breathtakingly beautiful face—is that gorgeously applied, perfectly glossy, cherry red lipstick.

Leave it to Liz to remind us, so many years later, that red lipstick has, and always will be, one of the best ways to achieve instant glamour. That must be why it was recently voted the most iconic beauty trend of all time!
